This course will examine how current poetry relates to past and evolving poetic movements. We will briefly survey various movements/generations of African-American poetry before focusing on the debut collections of six new African-American poets. Since class will be structured primarily around presentations, considered discussions and poetic responses, you should already have an understanding of the major elements of poetry and be able to utilize them accordingly in your writing and presentations.
