From Asian fusion foods to power yoga, it is quintessentially American to create a cultural "chop suey"- a dash of Eastern spice to liven up the comfort food of the West. Despite the fascination with Asian-inspired commodities, Asian Americans have historically and even still today, been considered "perpetual foreigners." As Asian culture becomes increasingly mainstream, how do we locate the line that divides foreign from American? In what ways has the American identity been shaped by Asian Americans? Moreover, how do Asian Americans craft their cultural identities through a mainstream American reflection of them? This course examines the inflections and influences¿accents¿that shape the American image from the vantage point of an emerging Asian America. We will read through the lens of fictions, films, architecture, music and dramas produced by Asian Americans as they wrestle with "our America." Our objective is to sharpen our critique of American culture and identity by bringing an awareness to the artistic productions of Asian Americans from the late 19th century to today. This is a class that focuses on primary materials, but with the methods and lessons from a various theoretical and historical traditions.
