This course takes part in and appreciates the anti-digital movement by exploring the roots of photography. Students will shoot with an array of large format cameras and print imagery using 19th and 20th century processes. Students will value having 'hands-on' control over the image from the beginning to the end product-which is a 'one-of-a-kind' photographic image. Course topics include shooting with different cameras (4x5, 8x10, pinhole, and zone plate), making contemporary tin-types, and working in alternative printing techniques. As a perk, students will have an opportunity to 'use-up' our last supply of Polaroid instant film. Prerequisites: A solid knowledge of black and white photographic processing and printing; 62-141; any 200 level CMU photo course. Alternative process or view camera knowledge a plus.
