Everybody has at least one story to tell when asked about the memory of bad service, while bad artifacts seem to be more easily forgotten. Perhaps in service this is becuase of that the memory is attached to ourselves. We talk about frustration, suspicion, shame, anger, powerlessness, and indignity¿there is something deeply personal about service experience. One of the main characteristics of service that we ourselves have to take part in the service production people co-produce. In a sense, it is users that are processed in the service production. This participation in what they experience and how they are treated in the process may be as important as the end outcome for the quality of service. Selected Topics on Service Design Theories is a seminar course exploring the difference between designing for service and designing an artifact, the nature of human experience, and design approach to creating systematic service experience. Through readings, lectures, and in-class discussions, the first part of the course provides the students with concepts, theories, and examples to help them learn about diverse existing theories about service design. The second part of the course provides an opportunity to apply these theories to design work. This course is for design grads only, or by instructor permission.
