Understanding Perception Through Design 51-374/51774 This course emphasizes audience expectations, also known as schemas, as a major influence on the artifacts we produce. For example, we read marble Corinthian columns as an entrance to a courthouse rather than to a home. The manner we use to communicate, either following or deviating from expectations, affects the way people perceive and process the information we present. Through lectures, discussions, readings, and projects, we will study the use of schemas in both print and digital mediums. We will also explore the bearing of expectations on the types of interactions and experiences we produce, answering the question: Can information become concrete and experiential versus abstract and readerly?
