Fitwits and the Edible Schoolyard project Mobilize! The Edible Schoolyard is a school garden-based program directed toward nutritional and agricultural education. Now in its second year in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Edible Schoolyard is the fruit of collaboration between school administrators, teachers, parents, community members, and the non-profit organization Grow Pittsburgh. Most of the elementary schools that Grow Pittsburgh serves through its Edible Schoolyard program lack the proper facilities to effectively incorporate the culinary portion of our program. Many do not have sinks or stove tops, making it difficult educate kids about where foods come from and proper ways to prepare food. We believe that a mobile kitchen would break down many of these barriers. By creating a vehicle that would house many of the essentials for teaching students basic science, engineering and culinary concepts, multiple lessons could be taught in one day as the vehicle travels to different schools in the district. The goal of this course is to design a system/brand identity and materials for the model kitchen that will reach students and parents early and offer just-in-time support for questions concerning their child¿s health and food choices they have available to them in schools and highlight the service that the model kitchen will offer. Designs could range from personal interactions with families in the Pittsburgh areas to a wide-reaching public messaging system. Each of the areas of development has varied opportunities for interactions, technology, outcomes and assessment goals. At the same time the mini is being run the junior industrial design students will be working on the interior and exterior spaces of the kitchen. We plan to bring both groups together at various times to share knowledge and bridge the two project components into one.
